China is both the ancestral home of tea and tea drinking practices.  The Guywan (Mandarin) or Chazhong (Cantonese) is the essence of simplicity in form and function.  The Guywan dates to about 1350 AD during the ming Dynasty and is the prototype of both the modern tea cup and the tea pot.  It is still used extensively in China and even today  remains one of the most satisfying ways of enjoying tea.

It consists of a saucer, bowl, and lid designed to be used as a unit to enjoy the appearance of the tea leaves, aromas of tea as it brews, and in drinking the infused tea liquor.  With the Guywan multiple brewings  of the same tea leaves  are not only possible, but desirable.  We often brew the same tea with a teapot and the Guywan - and the results are often different with the Guywan tea actually tasting better.

For those new to the Guywan, information on how to use it comes with each set.

***Guywan is also known as as Guiwan and Gaiwan in different Chinese dialects.
